..My degree in drafting & design has been implemented on occasions too numerous to mention. Prior to my work on the Saeger house I spent ten years working in Greenwich Connecticut building and restoring timber frame and conventional custom homes, additions, kitchens, baths, cabinets and wall units with some buildings and furniture dating back to the early 1700s.

Quarter sawn White Oak Hutch

..The original hutch that occupied this space was taken by a previous owner some 50 years ago. The space was patched in with cheap trim and plywood, and then all the woodwork in the dinning room was painted. There were no photos of the original. The top of the hutch is now home to some twenty angels.

.Design of the new hutch began by matching existing profiles used through out the room and mimicking the leaded glass pattern used in the corner cabinet doors. The design also includes twenty mirrors, two glass shelves, a three piece polished granite top, solid brass hardware, eight beaded inset doors and five whisper quiet self closing drawers.

.Construction began with the purchase of rough cut quarter sawn white oak. After planing the rough lumber to reveal the unique grain of the quarter sawn technique, the lumber was then sorted and sized to become a specific piece of the puzzle.

.When the millwork and assembly process were complete, the task of matching the stain and finish to the 100+ year old woodwork was next.

.With all hardware in place the installation process included scribing the top and base to fit the existing plaster, panels and floor, attaching the mirrors, granite tops and surrounding the unit with baseboard.

The Cherry Hutch

..This hutch which is 9-1/2 feet tall was designed to mimic the dormer windows, with trim profiles and fluted pilasters matching the custom wainscot, baseboard and cabinets of the third floor family room kitchen.

.The top of the hutch which matches the angle of the roof has three beaded inset beveled glass doors, two shelves, capped fluted pilasters, raised panel sides and a three piece crown.

.After being transformed from a pile of rough cut lumber to polished furniture it was then stained, lacquered, carefully carried up three flights of stairs, and installed.

Third Floor Alcove

..This alcove, located in the center of the third floor, was never an accessible usable space. The original rafters (sorry no photos) created an angled wall from left to right in the foreground of the second photo and held up the dormer roof beyond. They had to be held in place along with the dormer rafters and both sets cut to receive new hip rafters for each side

With the new hip rafters in place, transferring the weight of the two roofs to the corners, the remainder of the original rafters were removed creating a usable alcove. When completed the knee walls will have cherry wainscot and base to match those in the kitchenette.

Black Walnut and Oak Bar

This bar was custom made for Ron and Debra Posego. Inspiration for its construction came from rough sawn black walnut lumber harvested from her grandfather's farm some fifty years ago. During that time the lumber had been stored and passed on through the family. Someone always wanting to discover the beauty hidden beneath its rough, dust covered surface and build something special. When Ron had the opportunity to acquire it from Deb's uncle he too had a dream of its potential. After being stored in the attic of Ron's garage for another fifteen years, the time had come for it to be made into something special for the Posego home.

Concealed within the bar is a refrigerator, a sink with a forty two inch formica surround and storage area. The dream of having something special made with the walnut lumber from Granpa's farm is complete.
